Portland to Coos Bay

We spent the July 4th holiday with family, and left for Astoria on July 18th.  We headed down river, then to Coos Bay, OR after spending a couple days in Astoria.  Coos Bay was a 35 hour run with 10-15 knot winds.

Vancouver, WA railroad bridge opened to let us head SOUTH

"In the summer time..." isn't there a California song that says "you can reach right up and touch the sky"? California, here we come!

The lower Columbia River is constantly being dredged to maintain the channel depth needed for the big ships.

'Essayons' is a Corps of Engineers ship that services the lower Columbia River delta. It sneeks up on us, and turns just when we don't expect it :)

Arriving at the Coos Bay, OR jetty just at twilight. The bar had no restrictions, but it was pretty churned up.

The white giant egrets were so pervasive and elegant!

The South Estuary in Coos Bay had whimbrels, a curved-billed water bird.

Leaving Coos Bay in pea-soup fog. Our radar picked up an ocean freighter coming over the bar just as we were leaving. Thank you, Radar!
