Vava'u (Kingdom of Tonga) August 2009

Vava'u Group, the northern island group in the Kingdom of Tonga, was a great gunkholing area with snorkeling and scuba diving.  Unfortunately they had just had a ferry sink losing 75 passengers, and the islands were in mourning.  The time here was steps above our experiences in the Cooks and Niue.

Nieafu is the capital of the northern group of islands, and the base of cruising here.

Tongan at the counter is in mourning garb, a result of the ferry sinking just before we got there.

The market place in Nieafu had watermelons, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and so much more.

A huge cave shows the terrain both above and below the waterline.
